Yesterday we made the three plane hop to our 'other' home in Fethiye - wonderful! And so wonderful to be back. But something bugs me on these journey's no end. Every time we fly - and it's a regular occurrence, there is always at least two passengers (and I'm sorry to say they are usually men) who have decided that the on board safety instructions that have just been read simply do no apply to them. Yesterday's case in point involved two men. One in the aisle next to me who decided immediately after the safety instructions were read to whip out his i-pod and turn it on full volume, although for some bizarre reason thought to cover it with his hands when a stewardess walked past - just in case the loud music wasn't' a tip off. The second being an older passenger who unbelievably on ascent, got up and retrieved his laptop out of his overhead and promptly turned it on while we were still climbing. Both of these incidents straight after several announcements had been made NOT to turn on any electronic equipment during take-off and landing. Now maybe I'm nitpicking here, but as a nervous passenger who obeys all the rules I'd simply like to know why these guys don't think the same rules apply to them? Are the airlines just joking when they announce safety instructions? Do they do it just to annoy us or to watch those of us who are nervous, sweat and squirm that much more? If so; PLEASE STOP!!! But if there is really some merit behind why we have these rules then would you all please enforce them if for no other reason than to make my journey a little less stressful.
Post script:
Just to add to this. Yesterday coming home from Demark on a MALEV flight, I had two guys consistently checking their phones through the whole flight. One was even holding a conversation on his as we descended. When I asked the stewardess to tell them to turn their phones off she replied that they were in flight mode. How she knew that I don't know as she hadn't spoken to them and how does one hold a conversation on a phone that's in flight mode? The answer is you can't! So to that end you can guess a 'please explain' email has been shot off to MALEV and in the meantime here are a couple of links of interest:
Malev's safety information (Modified since my complaint letter) - see here.
(Unbelievably Malev has actually changed their on-line safety information since I sent them a 'please explain' letter.)
